Board Members Being Sworn In At March Board Meeting

GULFPORT, MS – The Gulfport School District Board of Trustees convened at the beginning of March to conduct official business, recognize outstanding achievements, and celebrate the continued success of its students, staff, and community.

During the meeting, Dr. Oswago Harper was officially sworn in as a new board member, and Bridget Weatherly was reappointed to continue her service. The board also reorganized leadership positions, with Bridget Weatherly assuming the role of Board President and Ben Vance transitioning from his previous position as President.

The Gulfport School District was also recognized at the state level, receiving two honors from the Mississippi School Boards Association. The district earned the Leadership in Governance Award, recognizing the dedication and commitment of its Board of Trustees in serving students and the community. Additionally, Gulfport received the Lighthouse School Leader Award, which recognizes the strong leadership that guides the district’s continued progress and success.

The board proudly recognized Military Families of the Year from across the district, honoring the strength, resilience, and support these families bring to Gulfport schools. Honorees included Jennifer Hilton; Gareth Zinger and family; Justin and Stacy Walker; the Gallardo Family; and the McKissack Family.

A highlight of the evening included the presentation of the PREPS Achievement and Growth Awards, recognizing schools for outstanding academic performance:

  • Bayou View Elementary – Top 10% Growth in Math & ELA; 5th Grade ELA Achievement

  • Central Elementary – 4th Grade ELA Achievement

  • Pass Road Elementary – 4th Grade Math Achievement

  • West Elementary – 3rd Grade Math Achievement

  • Gulfport Central Middle – 6th Grade Math Achievement

  • Gulfport High School – Top 10% Math Growth

The board also recognized students participating in Educator Rising for their accomplishments in competitive events:

  • K–3 Children’s Literature: Josie Wentworth, Olivia Szkolnik

  • Public Speaking: Ashira Peters

  • Lesson Planning – Humanities: Ashten Walker

  • Research Learning Challenges: Sadie Huffman, Anna Claire Andrus, Yexalen Estrada, Ja’Nylah Hollmon

Additionally, Career and Technical Education Director Jen Hornback presented the Ingalls Shipbuilding 2025–2026 STEM Grant, which will enhance hands-on learning opportunities and strengthen career pathways for students across the district.
