English Language Learners

Hi! My name is Holly Mosher, and I’m an 18-year-old sophomore in college majoring in elementary education. I’m currently working as an ESL assistant, and I absolutely love it. Helping students who are learning English has taught me so much about patience, creativity, and the importance of connection.

I am Renata Kora Storonskyj. I am from the country of Albania. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in K-6 Education with endorsements in English and Reading, followed by a Master of Arts in Teaching Languages (MATL) from the University of Southern Mississippi, 18 post graduate hours in Spanish, along with a Specialist Degree in Education Leadership from William Carey University.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of serving as an ESL teacher, where I gained invaluable experience working with English Language Learners (ELL) in both Albania and the United States. Proficient in several languages, I am deeply passionate about instilling a love for languages in my students. Since 1996, I have traveled to over 20 countries, which has enriched my understanding of diverse languages and cultures and enhances my teaching approach.

Soy Renata Kora Storonskyj, de Albania.  Yo tengo una Licenciatura en Educación K-6 con menciones en Inglés y Lectura, seguida de una Maestría en Enseñanza de Idiomas (MATL) de la Universidad del Sur de Mississippi, 18 horas de posgrado en español y un Título de Especialista en Liderazgo Educativo de la Universidad William Carey.

A lo largo de mi carrera, he tenido el privilegio de ser profesora de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL), donde adquirí una valiosa experiencia trabajando con estudiantes de inglés como segundo idioma (ELL) tanto en Albania como en Estados Unidos. Domino varios idiomas y me apasiona inculcar el amor por los idiomas en mis alumnos. Desde 1996, he viajado a más de 20 países, lo que ha enriquecido mi comprensión de diversas lenguas y culturas y ha mejorado mi enfoque docente.

My name is Jacqueline Wintruba, and I will be collaborating with the students and staff at Bayou View Elementary as the BOOST and ELL Interventionist. As an elementary teacher with over thirty-seven years of classroom experience, seventeen in the Gulfport School District, my focus will be supporting literacy for all students.

Reading is a fundamental part of your child's day. A strong foundation will take a student from learning to read to reading to learn! It is a privilege to work with and provide support to the ELL students. 

Mi nombre es Jacqueline Wintruba y colaboraré con los estudiantes y el personal de la escuela primaria Bayou View como intervencionista de BOOST y ELL. Como maestra de primaria con más de treinta y siete años de experiencia en el aula, diecisiete en el Distrito Escolar de Gulfport, mi enfoque será apoyar la alfabetización de todos los estudiantes.

La lectura es una parte fundamental del día de tu hijo. ¡Una base sólida llevará al estudiante de aprender a leer a leer para aprender! Es un privilegio trabajar y brindar apoyo a los estudiantes ELL.

Mrs. Doris M. Palacios serves students at Central Elementary. She is from Guatemala where she obtained an Associate Degree in Accounting. For the past two years, she has been very enthusiastic about applying her diverse skills and experience in a  dynamic professional environment, and is proud to currently serve as an ESL Professional for the Gulfport School District. 

La Sra. Doris M. Palacios presta servicios a los estudiantes de la Primaria Central. Ella es de Guatemala donde obtuvo un Título Asociado en Contabilidad. Durante los últimos dos años, ha estado muy entusiasmada por aplicar sus diversas habilidades y experiencia en una dinámica y ambiente profesional y está orgullosa de servir actualmente como profesional de ESL para el Distrito Escolar de Gulfport. 

Mrs. Tishell Rodriguez services students at West Elementary School. She was born and partly raised in Lima, Peru and migrated to the United States at the age of eight. She obtained a B.A in Foreign Language Licensure from the University of Southern Mississippi. During college, Mrs. Rodriguez had the opportunity to study abroad in her home country of Peru. She has taught Spanish for the last two years and is so excited to start teaching English as a second language. 

La Sra. Tishell Rodríguez servirá como maestra de ESL para la Escuela Primaria West. Nació y se crió en parte en Lima, Perú y emigró a los Estados Unidos a la edad de ocho años. Obtuvo una licenciatura en Licenciatura en Idiomas Extranjeros de la Universidad del Sur de Mississippi. Durante la universidad, la Sra. Rodríguez tuvo la oportunidad de estudiar en el extranjero en su país de origen, Perú. Ha enseñado español durante los últimos dos años y está muy emocionada de comenzar a enseñar inglés como segundo idioma.

Mrs. Mariah Johnson serves as our middle school ESL teacher in the Gulfport School District. She spent her early childhood growing up in the mountains of Jamaica before relocating to Mississippi. Mrs. Johnson has a passion for learning, which has led to her receiving two bachelor's degrees, one in International Business and the other in Spanish, along with receiving her master's degree in Teaching Languages with an Emphasis in Spanish all from The University of Southern Mississippi. Mrs. Johnson has served in education for five years, where she currently works as an ESL teacher. Mrs. Johnson combines her love for different cultures, history, and traveling and channels this energy and passion to her students. When she is not in the classroom, she spends her time attempting to conquer her wanderlust by traveling and lives firmly by the quote, "You never know until you go."

La Sra. Mariah Johnson continuará sirviendo como nuestra maestra de ESL en la escuela secundaria en el Distrito Escolar de Gulfport. Pasó su primera infancia creciendo en las montañas de Jamaica antes de mudarse a Mississippi. La Sra. Johnson tiene una pasión por el aprendizaje, lo que la ha llevado a obtener dos títulos de licenciatura, uno en Negocios Internacionales y el otro en español, además de recibir su maestría en Enseñanza de Idiomas con Énfasis en Español de la Universidad del Sur de Mississippi. . La Sra. Johnson ha trabajado en educación durante cinco años, donde actualmente trabaja como maestra de ESL. La Sra. Johnson combina su amor por las diferentes culturas, la historia y los viajes y canaliza esta energía y pasión a sus estudiantes. Cuando no está en el aula, pasa su tiempo intentando conquistar su pasión por los viajes viajando y vive firmemente con la cita: "Nunca se sabe hasta que se va".

Ms. Marizela Griffin services two schools for the Gulfport School District. She services students at 28th
Street Elementary and Central Middle School. She is a native of Texas and a prior military veteran with 8 years in the United States Air Force. She entered the field of education when her only child started school as a volunteer mom, and later as an employee. Ms. Griffin has a combined 14 years in education
serving as a teacher assistant, then later becoming a certified teacher. She earned a bachelor’s degree in early education from William Carey University with endorsements in Social Studies and English as a Second Language. She has a first-hand understanding of what it’s like to be an ESL student, as she learned English at the age of five. She has a passion for helping students overcome their language barriers and become successful in their learning.

La Sra. Marizela Griffin presta servicios a dos escuelas para el Distrito Escolar de Gulfport. Atiende a estudiantes en la Escuela Primaria 28th Street y en la Escuela Secundaria Central. Es originaria de Texas y veterana militar con 8 años en la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos. Entró en el campo de la educación cuando su hijo comenzó la escuela como madre voluntaria y luego como empleada. La Sra. Griffin tiene
un total de 14 años en la educación sirviendo como asistente de maestro, y luego se convirtió en maestra certificada. Obtuvo una licenciatura en educación temprana de la Universidad William Carey con especializaciones en Estudios Sociales e Inglés como Segundo Idioma. Ella tiene una comprensión de primera mano de lo que es ser una estudiante de ESL, ya que aprendió inglés a la edad de cinco años. Le
apasiona ayudar a los estudiantes a superar sus barreras lingüísticas y tener éxito en su aprendizaje.

Mrs. Glenda Cilliers services students at Gulfport High School.  She graduated with an Accounting degree from her home country of Honduras, after which she pursued a degree from William Carey University with concentrations in English, Social Studies, and Spanish. Mrs. Cilliers began working for Gulfport School District 16 years ago in the Spanish Program as the program leader. With this program, she had the opportunity to be a trainer of five districts across the state of Mississippi, including Oxford, Greenville, Gulfport, Pascagoula, and Poplarville. Mrs. Cilliers has had the honor to present at MFLA, AMTESOL, and SETESOL. Since 2010, she has been working in the ESL program where she has taught K-12th grade.

La Sra. Glenda Cilliers continuará trabajando como nuestra maestra de ESL en Gulfport High School. Se graduó con un título en Contaduría de su país de origen, Honduras, luego de lo cual obtuvo un título de la Universidad William Carey con concentraciones en inglés, estudios sociales y español. La Sra. Cilliers comenzó a trabajar para el Distrito Escolar de Gulfport hace 16 años en el Programa de Español como líder del programa. Con este programa, tuvo la oportunidad de ser capacitadora en cinco distritos del estado de Mississippi, incluidos Oxford, Greenville, Gulfport, Pascagoula y Poplarville. La Sra. Cilliers ha tenido el honor de presentarse en MFLA, AMTESOL y SETESOL. Desde 2010, ha estado trabajando en el programa de ESL donde ha enseñado desde jardín de niños hasta el grado 12.
