Velma Johnson is a Gulfport native
and Gulfport High School graduate. Velma is no stranger to BVMS. She began
her career in education at Bayou View Middle School nine years ago. Velma
taught physical education for three years and Computer Discovery for six
years. She received her Bachelor’s degree in physical education from the
University of South Alabama (1999). She obtained her Master degree in
Education Administration at the University of South Alabama(2003).
Velma not only was a teacher at BVMS but was also a team leader and
a coach. Professional contributions include United Way Chairperson, Talent
Optimization Team Member, Design Team Member, and Grant Writing Committee
member. Velma coached basketball (1999-2004), track (1999-2008), and cross
country (2000-2008).
In her spare time, Velma enjoys volunteering within her community.
She recently incorporated a non-profit organization titled Sisters with
Purpose. This corporation serves as a pillar of the community with a
genuine focus on supporting the needs and concerns of women and children
who have suffered any form of abuse.
She is married to Chandler Johnson. They have a
two-year old daughter, Aubrey.
