Guidance Services
Each school in the Gulfport School District is staffed with one or more
guidance counselors and/or social workers. The primary goal of guidance
services is to assist in the education of the "whole" child as economic,
socio-cultural, emotional, family, intellectual, or physical problems impact
the optimum learning of the individual student. The successful functioning
of each child within the realm of the total environment may require
preventative and/or remediative services based upon identification and
assessment of individual needs. The guidance personnel work to ensure the
greatest possible development of the holistic child through the use of
individual, small group, and whole group counseling that is designed to meet
the specific needs of the children they serve.
Intervention
Processes
Teacher Support Teams/Student Assistance Team (TST/SAT):
All Gulfport schools have TST/SAT programs which identify "at risk" students
and plan individualized intervention strategies. The program is designed to
support the student in crisis and strengthen the child’s skills attainment
levels. The TST/SAT is made up of school administrators, teachers,
counselors, the child’s parents or guardians, nurses, and other support
personnel.
Health Care
Services
Health Care Centers: Health care centers have been established
at Gulfport High School, Bayou View Middle School, Central Middle School,
and West Elementary School. This is a joint project between Gulfport School
District and Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. The centers are staffed with
nurses, and physicians from the community who volunteer their time.
Students from other schools may avail themselves of these services.
Services are at no cost to the students. There is a focus on maintaining
wellness, as well as, treating illness/injury. One primary benefit of these
centers is improved attendance due to the ability to keep students with
minor problems in school.
School-Based Nurses:
At all remaining schools, nurses are on staff to provide health services,
ranging from preventive to medical intervention within the scope of their
professional duties.
