INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL

GSD Instructional Model

The premise for instruction in the Gulfport School District builds upon the  district’s mission and core beliefs.  Our model represents a cycle of effective instruction, on-going student progress monitoring, analyzing student performance so that re-teaching and improved learning occurs.  Effective instruction requires teachers to know their students and how they learn best.  This process takes into account the whole learner by ensuring access to a curriculum that is both rigorous and engaging.  Teachers are challenged to create high quality work that authentically involves students in the learning process. When designing lessons, teachers consider the following critical qualities as defined by the Schlechty Center for Leadership in School Reform ©:

Design Qualities of Context (non-negotiable)

  Content and Substance – the essential learnings and skills that students must master as identified by educators in collaboration with the community;

   Organization of Knowledge – content organized so that access to the material is clear and relatively easy for all students;

      Clear and Compelling Product Standards – standards for assessing student products that are clear and important to students; and

      Protection from Adverse Consequences for Initial Failures - provision for students to receive feedback on their work and to have opportunities to reach the Standard throughout the process.

Design Qualities of Choice

      Product Focus – engaging work that focuses on a product or performance that is of value to students;

      Affirmation of Performance – opportunities for student work to be observed by persons other than the teacher

      Affiliation – work designed so that students are able to cooperatively work with others;

      Novelty and Variety – work varied in method and format so that students use a variety of skills and resources

      Choice – provision of choices in methods of completing and presenting student work

      Authenticity – work that has significance and is related to real life of students
