The Importance of Entrepreneurship

As big business jobs are lost due to corporate restructuring, displaced workers and many others create millions of new jobs through small to medium-sized entrepreneurial companies. In addition, women and minorities, who are sometimes shut out of corporate America, have sought the challenges of opening their own businesses like never before. Technology-computers, teleconferencing, e-mail, and the Internet- have connected the entire world in ways we could not even imagine a few years ago.

Consider these statistics:

New and smaller firms have generated over 30 million new jobs since the mid-1980's.
From the 1980's to the 1990's, the number of women-owned firms has doubled in the US.
Roughly 80% of recent Forbes lists of the wealthiest Americans are first-generation entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs in new and emerging firms have created many of the most dramatic innovations over the last 50 years.  Personal computers, cardiac pacemakers, overnight package delivery, and auto airbags are just a few of the innovations that have significantly changed the way we work, live, and play.

Entrepreneurs see the world as an opportunity and create a product to meet it, solve it, or improve it. In the process, they generate new businesses, new jobs, or even new industries- and, therefore strengthen the economy. As a result, entrepreneurs are having a major impact on the future economic growth of the US and the world.

So how do you start a new business in Mississippi? Where should you start? What are the various types of business ownership and the advantages of each? What would be the tax implications to my personal income if I start a new business? Need help on finding an idea for starting your own business? These questions and many more will be answered by enrolling in the Entrepreneurship class starting February 28th!
